I can tell the main idea of a text and explain why I think that is the main idea.

Using prior knowledge and the examples from text, I can demonstrate understanding of the text.

I can understand the proper use of colons

I can use capitals correctly.

I can use my knowledge of words and parts of words to spell words correctly.

Second Trimester

I can use word orgins to determine the meaning of new words.

I can use and explain common synonyms, antonyms, and homographs.

I can recognize the difference between facts, inferences, and opinions.

I can identify the conflict in a story and tell how it is solved.

I can recognize the differences between characters in a story and tell how it is important to the plot or theme.

I can write a story including a setting, a plot and an ending.

I can identify and correctly use propositional phrases, appositives, independent and dependent clauses.  I can use transitions and conjunctions to connect ideas.

I can correctly use pronouns, tricky verbs, adjectives and adverbs in writing and speech.

Third Trimester

I understand how to get information from text features such as: format, graphics, sequence, diagrams, illustrations, charts, and maps.

I can recognize root or base words from Greek and Latin and use them to figure out the meaning of new words.

I can understand and explain the use of figures of speech (such as metaphors) in a story.

I can understand and recognize themes and morals in stories.

I can describe why authors use common literary devices (imagery, metaphor, and symbolism).

I can understand that authors use different techniques to influence  the readers' perspective.

I can write an essay of multiple paragraphs including a topic paragraph, supporting paragraphs, and conclusion that summarizes the topic.

I can edit and revise writing to improve meaning.

Math

6th Grade Essential Standards

6th Grade – Math – 1st Benchmark
I will learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using positive and negative numbers.

I will write and solve equations using one variable.

I will be able to use Order of Operations to solve equations using one variable.

6th Grade – Math – 2nd Benchmark

I will know that pi is always 3.14 or 22/7.

I will know how to find the area and circumference of a circle.

I will recognize angles as vertical, adjacent, complementary, or supplementary and provide descriptions of each.

I will be able to solve the unknown measurement of one angle by knowing that the sum of all angles of a triangle is equal to 180 degrees.

From a written description, I will be able to draw different types of quadrilaterals and triangles.

I will calculate percentages involving discounts, sales tax, tips, and simple interest.

6th Grade – Math – 3rd Benchmark

I will be able to show that rate is a ratio comparing two different units of measure.

I will be able to calculate the range, mean, median, and mode of a set of numbers.

I will know how to select a variety of samples and tell which method best represents the population.

In simple cases, I will be able to judge the value of the statistical data.

I will be able to express the probability of simple and combined events.

I will show reasonable probabilities of ratios, proportions, decimals, and percentages.

5th Grade Math

First Trimester

I can estimate, round, and manipulate very large and very small numbers.

I can find the prime factors of all numbers  through 50 and write the numbers as the products of their prime factors by using exponents to show multiples of a factor.

I can add, subtract, multiply, and divide with decimals; add with negative integers; subtract positive integers; and verify if the result is reasonable.

I can do division, including divison with positive decimals and long division with multi digit divisors.

Second Trimester

I can explain percents as a part of a hundred.  I can find decimals and percent equivalents from common fractions and explain why they are the same.  I can determine a given percent of a whole number.

I can find decimals, fractions, mixed numbers, and positive and negative integers on a number line.

I can solve problems including ones arising in concrete situations, involving the addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers, and express answers in simplest form.

I can use fractions and percentages to compare data sets of different sizes.

I can compute and perform simple multiplication and division of fractions and apply these procedures to solving problems.

I can identify and graph ordered pairs in the four quadrants of the coordinate plane.

I can solve problems involving linear functions with integer values, write the equation, and graph the resulting ordered pairs of integers on a grid.

I can identify ordered pairs of data from a graph and interpret the meaning of the data in terms of the situation depicted by the graph.

Third Trimester

I can understand and find positive powers of nonnegative integers and solve exapmles as repeated multiplication.

I can use information taken from a graph or equation to answer questions about a problem situation.

I can use a letter to represent an unknown number.  I can write and evaluate simple algebraic expressions in one variable by substitution.

I can get and use the formula for the area of a triangle and of a parallelogram by comparing it with the formula for the area of a triangle.

I understand the concept of volume and can use the appropriate units to compute the volume of a rectangular solids.

I know the difference between two and three dimensional objects and can use appropriate unit of measure for each (perimeter, area, volume).

I can measure, identify, and draw angles, perpendicular and parallel lines, rectangles, and triangles by using appropriate tools (straightedge ruler, compass, and protractor)

I know the sum of the angles of any triangle is 180 degrees and teh sum of any quadrilateral is 360 degrees and use this information to solve problems.

I know the concept of mean, median, and mode.  I can compute simple examples to show that they may differ.
